Ah breakfast! Cereals, fresh fruit, bacon, sausages, eggs, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, and jams, and of course COFFEE! What a great start to the second day. It turns out that the cellars of the inn were turned into cells which were then used to house the convicts who built this beautiful bridge.
They made over a million bricks, constructed the bridge and then diverted the river to flow under it! Campbell Town has built the Convict Trail, individual bricks for each of the nearly 200,000 convicts who were transported to Australia.
The owner of the inn took us down into the cells and then showed us pictures taken by guests with ghostly orbs floating in the air and even one shot with an image standing between them. He relates that several studies have been down regarding these images and nothing scientific can explain these images. Everyone madly clicks away but no images appear on any of our shots. Perhaps they are the ghosts of the convicts and perhaps not, but I had a very fitful sleep full of tossing and turnings and awakenings.
It is a beautiful morning, made even sweeter by a quick drive to Ross and a wonderful walk around this fantastic village. Am I running out of expletives to describe Tasmania. You bet, this is a beautiful state to visit. And if you ever do you must make a trip here to Ross. We could spend a lot more time here than we did but the road and our bikes are calling!
Thankfully we are driven to top of a very long hill before we start our days’ “time in the saddle”. It is a day filled with some uphills and some wonderful downhills (one is almost 8 kilometres long) before we call it a day in the seaside town of Swansea. Total kilometers pedaled today, about sixty kilometres perhaps. And boy is my backside thankful when we stop. We did some pre-training for this back home, but not near enough. We are both okay, but rue the fact that we didn’t do a little more at home. The wind is pretty good but we both can feel our legs at the end of the day.
Accommodation is at the Meredith House. Yet another beautiful Inn and room. It’s a delightful walk around town, followed by a glass (or two) of port in front of a just the right size fire, over a game of Skip-bo while we while away the time waiting for dinner. Did we mention the rigors of this trip?
We have two days here in Swansea and the next day we are heading over to Freycinet National Park and the world famous Wineglass Bay, so we had better get to bed. What with all that good food, port drinking, sitting in front of the log fire, oh yes and the cycling, I don’t even get my book open before I’m off into never never land. Ahhh!
