After a bit of consulting with the park staff, who said the road was not passable to Fort Walsh, we went there anyways. Don’t take an RV or even a low slung car. Trucks are the recommended mode of transportation on this road. If it is wet, don’t even think about going … you will get stuck!
The drive was most interesting and we get a good sense of the history of this place.
We came across this cabin without warning. The interpretive panel says Albert and Sylvia Noble owned it from 1942 to 1952. My mother is a Noble … I wonder if we are related?
Fort Walsh was established in 1873 as a result of an Assiniboine First Nation massacre by wolf hunters and whiskey traders. Fort Walsh wasn’t open for another couple days, which was really too bad.
It looks to be a place to spend a good couple of hours if not the better part of the day. Apparently the interpretation is very good. This proved to be a great day for Oscar and Oreo. Without anything for traffic, and numerous stops to read the interpretive signage, they got to have a lot of time to run to their hearts content!
The rest of the day was pretty laid back as we decided to stay another night. It sure is nice to have this flexibility.
Gee Lawrie, nice binoculars. Aren’t those the ones that just about caused the divorce???? See you soon.
