An early start to the day has us following highway 21. We aren’t sure of our final destination, but we know we want to stop and see a lighthouse and a cheese factory and store along the way. I’m quite impressed with the landscape … it is still rural, but the farmhouses are more likely than not, big stone or brick mansions. There is an air of prosperity that I certainly didn’t expect. The green of a well watered countryside makes everything appear more lush too. I’ve heard of the humidity experienced in Ontario, and the stories aren’t exaggerated as I now know.
We do stop at the Pine River Cheese Cooperative. Unfortunately the guide is wrong and nothing but the store is in operation on this Sunday. Oh well, we do purchase several nice cheeses anyway. Next stop is the Clark Point Lighthouse. This is the tallest stone light in North America and is a National Historic Site … also not open today.
We have lots of time to spend in Ontario so we stop for the night at Point Farms Provincial Park early in the afternoon. The guide books says there are some interesting things to see in the nearby town of Goderich. Included is the fact that this is the largest Canadian harbour on Lake Huron. What the guide book fails to mention is that there is a wonderfully developed waterfront area, awesome Victorian, Georgian, and similar period homes and parks galore.
Prosperity is very apparent and one could not be anything but proud to call Goderich home. One of the first things we must do is tour the Gaol that Lawrie feels he must visit. In fact it is extremely interesting in its architecture and also reflects the dark side of the time period, namely 1842 when it was built.
Curious to know if the train station had any tracks nearby? Gorgeous looking building! I’m just wondering if it’s still being used for its original purpose.
