Do you think this grain elevator is overly tall? Just because Lawrie thought there weren’t many elevators left, they are showing up at almost every town now. Many need a coat of paint that we doubt will happen … they are becoming, if not already are, obsolete.
The highway is wonderfully smooth, Lawrie says he is exhausted and needs a nap after only an hour of driving! Then the concrete highway starts and that wakes us up thoroughly … the expansion joints make a very mind-dulling kerthunking every 2 seconds and then you have to add the echo for the back tires and the trailer tires … not pleasant at all. Winnipeg is not soon enough! We have chosen Birds Hill Provincial Park which is located just north of Winnipeg and also on the way to Lower Fort Garry. It happens to be a wonderful park and I wonder why we aren’t staying for the summer. While walking Oscar and Oreo we happen across this historic homestead.
If you want to know all the reasons I think this is the best place, just email me and I’ll give you the details! After setting up, we take off into Winnipeg armed with the Park Attendant’s list of must see places, enough to keep us here for the next month.
It seems so much of the settlement of the West can be traced to this spot. So much so that Parks Canada has commemorated this spot to the spirit of Westerners – past, present and future.
The Forks is very interesting but we need to come back for another day to really do it justice. We promise ourselves to do it again on the flipside.
