It’s 1:45 in the afternoon and guess what we are on? Okay, this is the third one in less than two weeks. The difference with this one is it isn’t a BC Ferry and it is free! The trip takes all of 35 minutes and crosses Kootenay Lake from Balfour to Crawford Bay. Nice little ferry and nice little trip.

Oscar decided to take a swim today while chasing a whole flock of ducks! That was very funny until he had to spend some time in the crate! The drive down both sides of the lake was twisty and very picturesque. We stopped at Crawford Bay and bought some handmade brooms … very interesting and useful!
Lynn also acquired a new handwoven hat! They also have a glassblower, a blacksmith and other artisans. Plan to spend time and money!
We have a real peeve with BC Provincial Parks. Twice now we have had plans to stay at parks that have been closed even though the guides say everything is open by May 1. The first time wasn’t so bad because the entrance was directly off the highway. This time was most annoying because we drove four kilometers to make this closed discovery. They could have put a closed sign on the highway sign! Some of the parks have the closed signs on them, so what was wrong with ensuring that the ones off the highway are correctly signed? Brother! Actually tonight we are all by ourselves at Mount Fernie Provincial Park … we think they have abandoned a bunch of their parks, including this one. The highway signs are still in place, but the signs at the park are gone and no one seems to want to collect any camping fees. This one had lots of garbage to pick up though, very sad in my view.
BC Provincial Parks closed!
Holy cow! or should we say holy elk, or holy deer, holy moose, or even holy batman, look at the bears … grizzly bears? Nothing stops traffic like a couple of Yukoners out with the camera and binoculars. Lynn spotted the grizzly sow and her two cubs and in no time at all there were three cars and two trucks all having a good look. Fortunately the bears were at a goodly distance away and were aware of us but not the least interested. Lawrie really likes this stretch of country. Of course the impressive number of animals close to the highway helped a lot! There are open valleys, mountain vistas and a wonderful array of scenery. Most impressive even to a jaded BCite never mind the flatlander! I also have to remind you we haven’t even got to the Crowsnest Pass … tomorrow may be even more spectacular!
Hand made brooms….?????…are they the flying type???
