Today is strictly a drive day. It pours for most of the day. We are heading from Gros Morne National Park to L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site on the northern tip of Newfoundland, a distance of some 320 kilometers. On our way south again we plan to take another ferry ride, this time to Labrador where we will visit Red Bay National Historic Site. Then back in Newfoundland we will stop at Point aux Choix National Historic Site. From there we will swing east again ending up in St. John’s before continuing south to Argentia were we will catch the ferry back to North Sydney. Well that is the plan, it waits to be seen if it changes! Parks Canada is apparently doing a rotating strike which means we may get to see the sites we came here for, and then again, maybe not. As the next week unfolds we will let you know what happened! Along the way today we took these photos.
L’Anse aux Meadows, site of the first known Viking site in North America, is a cool place and I don’t say that because it rained when we first arrived there. I think I was awake in history class when we learned about Vinland and Leif Erikkson, but what I didn’t really take in was this place in the north of Newfoundland that had evidence of a Norse settlement from 1000 AD. We spent time looking at the film, displays and artifacts tonight and plan on a return trip in the morning to visit the actual site. On our way back to the RV park we ambled our way around a few coves which are so ‘Newfoundland’ that a person could just be happy!
