Sleeping in until 9:30 on a Monday morning is quite okay … at least while one is on holiday. We don’t often start the day so late, but with no travel plans today it was nice to be lazy! We had breakfast and then left a disgruntled pair of pups to go hike a little trail to a waterfall. I’m sure you can feel the spray in your face and the cool air of this location!
Then we went on a Discovery cruise to the very tip of the peninsula that Forillon occupies. That was most interesting … seals, birds, whales, racing sailboats, interesting geology and terrific scenery.
This is a beautiful park and is worth every tax payer dollar that goes into it. It is also the end of the Appalachian Mountains and is the terminus of the Appalachian Trail system. Forillon was formed millions of years ago. Plate tectonics thrust the sea bead upwards in two massive upheavals, approximately twenty and seventy million years ago. You can see this in the layering of the rock faces that we passed by on our boat cruise. There are also some of the oldest rocks in the world found here, as well as, rocks that are normally found only deep beneath the earth’s crust. While the geology is interesting enough, seventeen different species of whale visit or are residents of the area, including the largest whale in the world, the blue whale. The whales we saw on our trip were too far away for identification but were probably minke whales, a relatively small toothed whale that is resident all year round. Lobster traps are all over the place and very close to shore. They have bears, we saw a young one and huge beds of wild roses that fill the air with their aroma. Forillon is truly a magnificent area and would be well worth a few extra days, but alas, we must move on! Later in the day, Oscar and Oreo got a run and I got a photograph of the highest lighthouse in Canada. Now is that because it is on a height of land that causes it to be the highest or is it because the lighthouse itself is the tallest of them all?
Thank you for sharing these delightful pics. My daughter is completing a project for school on le parc de Forillon. She is excited and we all hope to visit another region of Canada’s majestic beauty.
